Torus Trooper is one of those freeware games that's a throwback to old arcade games, while at the same time polishing things up and adding something new.
Plot: There is none, so that won't be covered. Swiftly on...
Graphics: The ships are made of good ol' vector lines, and the tunnels that your ship travel through look simple but awesome at the same time. And don't think it's always the same colour- it changes constantly as your energy (score) piles up and you careen through the tunnel.
Gameplay: You control a ship and must keep a high speed (Up) to race through tunnels against a time limit- sort of a cross between Tempest and STUN Runner. While you advance you'll be bombarded with bullets from enemies to the point where this game seems to have a bit of Touhou in there as well, which deducts 15 precious seconds, which is a lot considering you need to be quick. You can get more time though by dodging bullets for long enough and killing the occasional boss enemies. Simple but addictive, as is the formula of most games in this style. Bit of a learning curve, but can be conquered.
Sound: Thumping Tempest-inspired techno music. Hard to describe, but listen to it. It's brill.
Appeal: Addictive as I said before. To save annoyance the game does have a save feature. Your progress will automatically be marked and saved every few levels. And of course there's higher difficulties...
Plot: *none so won't be counted in this review
Graphics: 8/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Sound: 10/10
Appeal:10/10
Overall: 93% (technically it's meant to be 92.5, but I'm not confusing anyone with decimals in my scores)
Simply put, this is a freaking must-play.
